STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
Field Placement/Internship:
Undergraduate level - At REX, we offer social work students working towards their associate and/or bachelor's degrees the opportunity to complete their internships. We make every attempt we can to provide a placement that aligns with the student's desired experience, based on their experience, skill set and goals. These internships are not typically clinical in nature and tend to be more directed at macro level experiences. There is also a space for looking at policy, both within REX and in the community, as well as grant writing possibilities. Examples of tasks/experiences that a student at this level might experience: developing and improving our community resource guide, community relationship development, assisting with a program evaluation of REX, assisting in policy development within in REX, assisting in developing audit tools for internal use, getting to sit in on case consultations regarding clients of REX, developing professional presentations to be used both internally and externally of REX, opportunity to participate in role play including development of case conceptualization and treatment plan for said role play, etc.
Graduate level - Additionally, we offer social work students at the graduate level the opportunity to complete both their foundation and advanced placements at REX. A student seeking their foundation level, will get the above mentioned opportunities plus access to training in modalities of therapy offered by REX, observation of therapy with a variety of clinicians at REX (for clinicians and clients open to being observed), working case management with clients, active role play around diagnosing and treating clients, opportunity to develop and implement a psychoeducational group, opportunities to participate in community training completed by clinicians at REX, etc. For the social work student seeking their advanced placement level, if they have the appropriate experience and/or completed their foundation level placement with REX, they will get the opportunity to take on a small caseload of therapy clients, opportunity for higher level policy and practice work, and an overall richer clinical experience. For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner students, because they typically are seeking very short term placements, they are limited to observing client sessions, role play with peers, research projects and actively participating in consultation.
Unfortunately, at this time field placements, internships and practicum placements are non-stipend.

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS
To initiate the process, we ask every student applicant to send in their resume, cover letter and three educational/professional/clinical references here. This allows us to learn a little about you. There will be some people that this simply isn't the place for, they may be wonderful clinicians but not a match for REX. If you are selected, we will reach out with the next steps. If not, you will be notified.
We value the collective, inclusive, compassionate, and connected culture that we've nurtured in our team thus far. As part of this, every member of the team from clinician to admin and even our interns, are invited to participate in the hiring process of our peers. If you are selected, we will invite you to 1-2 group interviews with as many of our staff as possible. While we would prefer those interviews (or at least one of them) be in person, we understand that may not be an option or difficult to attain, so we're open to virtual as well. We encourage that you be prepared with your own questions for us, because we will certainly have many questions for you! MSW-I will participate in a group interview, however it may be a smaller group of people participating. If you are selected, we will reach out with the next steps. If not, you will be notified.
Because we are so protective of our clients and our clinical environment, we do have applicants submit samples of their work. To do this, we ask applicants to do a mock treatment plan and a mock progress note (templates available below - you may use your own if you'd like) based on either one of the vignettes provided below OR to create a 10-15 min mock therapy session video with a friend/colleague (not an intake, it must be a snapshot of the session). We are looking at your clinical presence, empathy, verbal and non-verbal communication, and how you interact with the the mock client. Limited experience is not a disqualifier at all, we work with folx on building their skill set. This gives us insight into where that is. We are therapists too, we understand that for many of us, documentation is not our strength. We also realize that therapists aren't film producers so a simple zoom meeting that you record would suffice. If you are selected, we will reach out with the next steps. If not, you will be notified.
